Whimsical looks along with outrageous attitude might have helped her to stand out and become a star. She always talks loud and clear which I completely admire but this time a message was a bit vague.

Even though I do not advocate those who complain about her being a bad role model for kids, it is not easy for me to understand what could possibly make a self-sufficient grown woman of such power to wear and extol THIS. Don't you think it's classless and degrading to women? 

We've been struggling for centuries so that people treat the word and what's behind it with  respect but cases like this may raise a certain doubt about girls power. Most female artists nowadays encourage us to feel confident about our sexuality although it does not necessarily involves turning into a sex object. 

Dear Rihanna, please keep showing off that gorgeous body of yours but do it more gracefully, will you?

MOVIE: The Internship

Summer has come along with a long chain of comedies, action movies and anything that will drag bored to death teens out of their homes (and Internet, eventually), so just get over it. I tried and found it satisfying enough. Moreover, I now feel a certain courage to recommend you this fascinating buddy movie starring charming Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson THE INTERNSHIP.  

The story begins with two friends working as sales agents. Sadly, the good times for their company have come to an end leaving two of them behind. And do you know what's the most irritating thing about that? Everyone sells online except for those two! Next step – taking an internship in Google. Could it be more preposterous? Yeah, I know you've just had that thought. But don't encourage your overly judgmental self, give this movie a chance and it may become your summer's biggest revelation.

Honestly, I was impressed by GOOGLE's office. It doesn't really matter whether it was a well-thought product placement or not, GOOGLE office is a total knock-out, definitely worth its presence in the movie.  

The movie is light, unpretentious, yet I would't dare call it dull. The Vaughn-Wilson duet does have that amazing chemistry and leads the story smoothly. You can't help but believe everything is true, not minding about cliches and conventional buddy movie scenes. It's all natural and healthy mood elevator producing hope and steady belief in the beauty of this life.

And yes, they gonna play quidditch, seriously.

FASHION: Соревнование шляпок в Аскоте

18 июня в графстве Беркшир (Великобритания) состоялось открытие Королевских скачек Royal Ascot. Скачки в Аскоте — не только одно из главных спортивных соревнований, но и светский раут, занимающий почетное место в календаре дам и господ высшего света после регаты на Темзе и выставки цветов в Челси. Оценивать внешний вид посетителей мероприятия для меня вдвойне интересно, а все из-за того, что британский дресс-код в подобных случаях обязывает женщин надевать шляпки — это отличительная черта национальной моды Соединенного Королевства, к слову, отнюдь не единственная.

Главное правило выбора головного убора здесь — суметь выделиться из толпы вычурной, оригинальной шляпкой и в тоже время выглядеть достаточно элегантно, подчеркивая свой статус. Особо азартные гости делают ставки на цвет и фасон шляпки самой королевы. 

Если хотя бы один из обязательных элементов туалета упущен — вход на скачки вам воспрещен. Но погодите расстраиваться ведь с прошлого года у самого входа на ипподром вы сможете получить перчатки, шали и галстуки у так называемых дресс-ассистентов.

MOVIE: STAR TREK: Into Darkness Will Make You Feel Sympathy for The Devil

The good thing about action movies these days is they become more thought-provoking and smartly-written rather then simply feeding the viewers with an entertaining eye candy.  Long-awaited premiere of J.J.Abram's Star Trek: Into Darkness has proven to be both action-packed sci-fi movie, but not just thoughtless action, kept me on the edge of my seat, and morally complex drama at the same time. 

I've never been a Trekkie so it's difficult to judge whether the new series of the franchise are relevant to those from 60s or not but they have their own flare, that's I can promise.

What brought me to the movies at the first place? Of course, it's dazzling Benedict Cumberbatch who stands out among all the cliché Hollywood boys and girls. “He fuses Byronic charisma with an impatient, imperious intelligence that seems to raise the ambient I.Q. whenever he’s on screen," says A.O. Scott in his Star Trek: Into Darkness review. 

How did it come an actor with clearly intelligent approach to choosing roles ended up in so-called summer blockbuster? The very same question coming from a Russian movie critic I was asking myself. Well, it's time to clarify few things, carefully avoiding spoilers, folks.

This time the Enterprise crew goes after a dangerous fugitive recently having killed Star Fleet headquarters. John Harrison is the guy's name.  While we are excited to reunite with our good old friends the story gets more and more twisted with every second.  Utterly violent and unbelievably strong,  he's also capable of some other talents.

According to Mr.Cumberbatch “He has extraordinary physical powers, but also mental powers. He can sow an idea, which is as powerful as gunshots or close-hand combat, which he’s masterful in. He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation. It’s quite exciting to watch."The question remains will Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) succeed considering his reckless actions as part of his own lifestyle. As for Spock (Zachary Quinto), emotionally detached Vulcan will have to decide whether he does or doesn't want his heart to rule his head. 

But how is this plot different from any action movie with a bit mindless and naive but courage hero ready to save us all (protagonist) from a  monstrous murderer (antagonist)?  In good books and scripts as well, no character is ever simple and his actions obvious and understandable. Mostly, because nothing in this life is.  No one can be an absolute evil or absolute good. Besides, there's always a contradiction, clash of interests and beliefs and from every participant's point of view he/she is the one who has the right opinion.  For me, one of the best way to check the literary value of the script is to try and feel the sympathy for the devil and J.J.Abrams movie gave me that.

Aside from all that, Star Trek: Into Darkness is a well-balanced adventure with an explosive ending which I may watch few more times.

LIFESTYLE: Self Improvement vs. Self Indulgance

Once upon a time I was surfing the Internet killing time as people do. It was the day I found a truly mind-blowing LiveJournal by a young, smart, sophisticated and successful surgeon. In a minute I plunged into the world of confidence, hard work and never ending self improvement, the universe of People Who Can.

 

She calls herself an artful Neo-Darvin transforming larvas to pupas or as she prefers to say "turning monkeys to women again". Although she does believe the real beauty comes from within, in Moscow, The City That Never Sleeps, evolution will obliterate you if your body is not good enough. Her profession is one of the most anticipated ones in the world, yet she has never doubted it. 

La femme médecin doesn't lack neither sharp tongue nor extraordinary stories to tell. Every day for her is a fight — an unchanging war for success, knowledge and immaculate appearance. But there's nothing unusual! - you're exclaiming. Wait till you see how astonishingly tough a human being can be and what an incentive it may provide. Sleeping 4 hours per night, working out like hell, studying and being absolutely professional at work. Kate represents the Sex&City type of women: self-made, strong-willed, good-looking, healthy and extremely demanding to both - herself and everyone around, still quite rare for Eastern Europe. She is one of the "cut the comedy and get to work" girls and I was absolutely thrilled with it.

I couldn't help but retrieve the whole bunch of those unpleasant pictures in my brain. Here I'm choosing Facebook over meeting my deadlines. A bit light-minded, you see. Oh, and here is the same me ignoring pilates for a few extra hours of sleep. Suddenly, I realized it wasn't the type of photo album I expected everyone to see. Could I hope for more when constantly admitting myself of regular and superfluous self-indulgences?

Apperantly, there are also people who claim such a lifestyle to be limited, restricted and unnecessary. Few minutes later I was reading a 30 year old woman's blog who mocked at working out and conscious eating as well as being proud of oneself and bold to lazy hedonists.

What you need to determine is this – do you like watching or do you like participating. For me, the answer has never been clearer, it emerged from that aspiring posts like some sort of epiphany. Time to move on.

MOVIE: Побочный Эффект: Мы Все Хотим Любви и Денег

Психологический триллер Побочный эффект Стивена Содерберга, представленный в основном конкурсе Берлинского кинофестиваля наконец-то вышел в украинский прокат.  Типичная медицинская драма в течении 106 минут экранного времени превращается в гениальное попурри, цитируя различные жанры, откровенно обнажая человеческую сущность и оставляя зрителю ни малейшего шанса приблизиться к разгадке до начала титров.

 

 В начале фильма мы видим типичную американскую семью жизнь которой уверенно катится в никуда. Эмили (Руни Мара) наконец-то дождалась своего мужа (Ченнинг Таттум) из тюрьмы, но былые чувства, ровно так же, как  место в социуме и достаток уже не вернуть. Страдая от тяжелой формы депрессии Эмили начинает принимать лекарства, но неожиданные побочные эффекты приводят к необратимым последствиям и ставят под угрозу компетентность врача (Джуд Лоу).

Казалось бы, подобные истории уже давно изжили себе и создать по-настоящему захватывающий и напряженный сценарий, отталкиваясь от бекграунда из сотней клише не под силу никому. Тем не менее, персонажи Побочного эффекта максимально логичны, грамотно прописаны и, самое интересное, никто из них не может сохранить симпатию и сочувствие зрителя от начала до конца картины. Помните то известное правило дедуктивного метода Шерлока Холмса? "Когда вы исключили невозможное, то, что осталось, даже самое невероятное, должно быть правдой ..." Этим советом стоит воспользоваться при просмотре фильма. 

Миллионы людей по всему миру принимают антидепрессанты. Регулярное посещение психотерапевта сегодня - обязательный ритуал сродни курению в офисе Madmen. Повлияет ли скандальный сюжет картины на отношение к фармакологической индустрии? "Если мы сможем сделать с кабинетами психотерапевтов то, что Челюсти сделали с пляжами, это будет очень круто"  -  заявляет о своих планах режиссер.

Всему миру Содерберг известен как один из немногих режиссеров, умело сочетающих принципы авторского и коммерческого кино. Фактически это и является его оригинальной формулой успеха. "Сам фильм имеет двойное дно, - загадочно объявляет Джуд Лоу в одном из интервью, - он обнаруживает такие вещи, которые никто от него не ожидал. И, конечно же, герои тоже. Особенно героиня Руни Мары".

"Кардиолог может диагностировать болезнь по тестам. Это все будет в крови. Но кто может вовремя обнаружить вранье? - говорит в фильме доктор Виктория Сиберт (Кетрин Зета-Джонс).

В этот раз, Содерберг утвердил на роли всех, кого уже однажды снимал в своих фильмах. Исключением стала Руни Мара, чей громкий дебют у Дэвида Финчера принес ей славу одной из самых талантливых восходящих звезд Голливуда. И это звание вполне заслуженное. Увидеть прямые доказательства можно и в Побочном эффекте - роль Эмили предполагала постоянную игру персонажа в его реальной жизни, а, значит, перед актрисой была задача повышенной сложности. Хрупкая, нежная и несправедливо несчастная девушка с профилем Одри Хепберн на наших глазах переживет достаточно метаморфоз для того, чтобы каждый смог поверить - умение разбираться в людях никому не под силу. Не менее убедительно выглядит и Джуд Лоу, впрочем этим уже никого не удивишь. Удивительная харизма Кетрин Зета-Джонс сделала ее персонажа неоднозначным и запоминающимся.

Для меня немалым преимуществом стала возможность просмотра на языке оригинала без дубляжа. С недавних пор кинотеатр "Жовтень" устраивает подобные сеансы дважды в неделю.
