MOVIE: GAMBIT. The Adventures of Cowgirl in London

Honestly, I had been dying to watch this movie for a few months up to the Ukrainian premiere in March. I'm definetely not a huge lightweight comedy fan but could you resist the all-star cast including Colin Firth and Alan Rickman themselves? And did I mention that an American movie takes part in London? Although there were a lot of dissaproving reviews standing on my way to the cinema but I did my best not to be judjful and give «GAMBIT» a proper credit.

«GAMBIT» is a 1966 classical comedy remake and having the Coen brothers names as scriptwriters didn't serve any good. Firstly, because we simply expected a grippring, intricated and highly amusing plot from the criminal blockbusters masters. It surely isn't either groung-breaking or superwitty but it does have a certain charm and a huge amount of laughable moments. The mediocrity of the story was saved from sinking by an extremely strong cast. I never considered Cameron Diaz to be very gifted — her dramatic type always remains the same, yet in a curious way she is perfect for PJ Puznowski, a Texas cowgirl living in a trailer. Cameron here is absolutely convincing, funny and deadly charismatic.

Gambit
Colin Firth plays a neurotic wimp Harry Dean who is a fine arts expert constantly frustrated by his abusive boss (Alan Rickman). He is absolutely stunning in his character's awkwardness and failure. Tired of being a trifle Harry makes up a plan of selling a fake Monet to his boss Lionel Shahbandar who happens to be a passionate art collector. Rickman's character here is gross, twisted villain and no one dares to doubt his filling the bill. By the way, the Gambit, a fictional comic book character which as a mutant has an ability to operate a pure kinetic energy portrays Lionel Shahbandar, a powerful mass media magnate. The voluntary participants in a crime are miss Puznowski and a retired major also known as a very skillful artist. The calculations were crafty but did you really believe it could go seamlessly? What happens next is a mixture of sharp British humour, wordplay and situational comedy, some corny-flavoured moments and a naked Alan Rickman scene before the curtain falls.

Gambit
Aside from that, “GAMBIT” is a fresh, lovely comedy that carried me away to those times when the genre of comedy was light, sweet and of high quality in matters of acting. My verdict – worth watching.
